THE CURRICULAR
FACTORS CONSIDERED IN PLANNING THE CURRICULA AT THE BELLS
A. Philosophy of The Bells: to produce well educated, well adjusted and disciplined young people who will be guided to face adult life with confidence and who will therefore play constructive roles in the adult community as good citizens of their countries and the world.
B. Nigerian Government’s Policy on Education
C. Public expectations and social needs
D. Relevance i.e. serviceability, acquisition of techniques and skills which are necessary to sustain and enrich the lives of the students
E. Functionality i.e. workability, feasibility of the curricula, striking the right balance between idealism and realism.
F. Culture and traditions of the Nigerian people as well as other cultures around the world.
The curriculum prepares students not just for the formal external examinations, but also in the formal areas of students’ lives. They are designed to equip the students with the wholesome spiritual, moral, physical and intellectual values.
ICT/INTERNET SERVICES
Information and Communication Technology is an integral aspect of the teaching and learning processes. All teaching staff and some non-teaching staff receive regular training in ICT and the students are naturally a part of this exercise.
SRC- STUDENTS’S REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
In addition to the Prefectorial system, which devolves certain limited responsibilities on our students to develop their leadership qualities, we also have in place a Students Representative Council (SRC). Prefects and members of the representative council are elected democratically by the students themselves. The membership cuts across all classes and also includes interest groups such as clubs and societies. The main purpose is to inculcate the practice and spirit of democracy and integrity in the students. Further avenues for encouraging democratic ideals are in students’ membership of the Games Committee and holding executive posts in clubs and societies.
SPORTING FACILITIES
Sporting activities are integral and compulsory aspects of our school life. Our mini Stadium has facilities for many sporting activities such as athletics, football, basketball, cricket, hockey etc. Swimming and horse-riding are also encouraged.
HEALTH CARE
For good health management of the Students, apart from a visiting Doctor, the schools’ clinic is manned by well qualified, experienced Nurses and attendants. There is also a well-stocked Medical Laboratory where tests are carried out promptly. Referral cases and emergencies are attended to at Medicare Clinic and Rubee Hospitals (both in Ota).
SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
Moral excellence is inculcated at The Bells. This is done by encouraging students to take active part in religious activities in addition to the daily meditation/devotion in the hostel by both Christian and Muslim students. Sunday service is held in the school every week for our Christian students while their Muslim counterparts worship in the community Mosque in Ota every Friday. Catholic students also attend the Mass held on the last Sunday of every month in the community’s Catholic Church. The sermons and exhortations which are delivered in these services help to groom the children into God-fearing individuals who are guided by high moral standards set by their various religions.
GUIDANCE & COUNSELLING SERVICES
Our counselors are members of The Counseling Association of Nigeria (CASSON). The Students are given vocational, educational and personal social guidance.
The Department organizes:
· Visits to educational and career fairs
· Remedial programmes
· Students to make career choices with input from Parents
· Psychological and vocational aptitude tests
· Students to adjust to school problems among others.
